I was surfing the web for info on chickens and gardening when i tripped over this blog post. The book sounds exactly what i’m looking for. I can start reading up on this stuff now, so when we get our home we’ll be educated and ready for serious city farming. :)

Here’s what BoingBoing.net had to say about it:  “The Urban Homestead…is a delightfully readable and very useful guide to front- and back-yard vegetable gardening, food foraging, food preserving, chicken keeping, and other useful skills for anyone interested in taking a more active role in growing and preparing the food they eat. I learned a great deal about composting, self-watering containers, mulching, raised bed gardens, vermiculture (worm composting), and raising chickens by reading this info-dense book.” read more at: http://www.boingboing.net/2008/06/23/the-urban-homestead.html#previouspost

Its supposed to be spring right about now, but March is still saying OK to snow. bah! On March 21st Woody’s sister is throwing a block party full of seed swapping and fun things like that. I can not wait! I’ve been thinking of herbs and fruits and veggies i can plant in pots on my side porch. I still need to observe the light it gets.

Since Woods and i are renting and our housemates have the main garden in the back, i’d like to have a separate potted garden i can pick up with me and take to our next abode (when and if).

  • tomatoes
  • new potatos
  • chives
  • basil, basil and MORE basil!
  • mint
  • Strawberries
  • ginger
  • garlic
  • lavender
  • oregano
  • small peppers like jalepeno and serrano peppers

I need to research what else grows well in pots. also gotta talk to the neighbors and see if i can at least just plant Zucchini. YUMMM.

Check out these cool planters:

These are more like what i’m planning:

Quicky Blog Bio

I'm an awkward gal with a family of 2 bratty cats, a wee little Boston Terrier and a hungry husband. We live in Portland Oregon and lead a pretty chill life blessed with good local food and micro-brews.

We only cook low-fat and nutritional vegan meals, with a handful of vegetarian dishes. I hope there's at least one recipe that I make that inspires you to create awesome meals in your own home.
