I was surfing the web for info on chickens and gardening when i tripped over this blog post. The book sounds exactly what i’m looking for. I can start reading up on this stuff now, so when we get our home we’ll be educated and ready for serious city farming.

Woody took a nap yesterday afternoon after hangin with his sis over Tea. After a while the cats woke him up clawing at the windows and acting crazy. Thinking there might be some birds on the lawn, He looked out the window and saw 6 birds… chickens to be exact! The neighbor 2 houses down has chickens and they got loose. Woody ran and got the neighbor and he kindly took his chickens back home with him.
I thought this was all very appropriate being that Woody and i have been talking about getting some chickens. Maybe not now at our current residence, but when/if we get our own home, we’ll definately be getting chickens.
The City of Portland lets you own 3 chickens at a time, any more and you need to buy a permit for about $40 or so.

I’m daydreaming, but i’d love to have a chicken coup and rely solely on those happy little chickens for our egg needs & entertainment. I used to have chickens and turkey when i live in California with my family. I remember it was so fun just to sit out and watch the little cluckers. We’d throw a potato bug in and it would turn into an instant football game between all the hens and roosters. :)
